Education

Hello! My name is Erica Abbett. Having tutored for nearly 15 years, I also taught English and history at The Episcopal School of Dallas (ESD) until my son was born in 2019. For the past three years, I have focused exclusively on tutoring, writing, and building my small educational company Vocabbett, which specializes in helping students improve their vocabulary in a fun, pain-free way. My preferred age range is 5th-9th grade, and I specialize in all areas of English (reading, writing, vocabulary, etc.) However, I am also happy to help with Latin and history. Helping students overcome their challenges, watching them thrive in subjects that once terrified them, is such a rewarding experience. I cannot tell you how many times I've met a student who thinks they're just "not good" at English because a teacher has written "awkward phrasing" or "grammar" in the margins of their paper, but never really isolated the issue. As a tutor, I have the ability to zero in on exactly what is challenging the student and fix it with almost dizzying speed. Parents often say they can see improvement in their child's writing after just a few sessions. If your child is struggling in English class, I would be so happy to help!

Experience

I was a full-time teacher at The Episcopal School of Dallas (ESD), teaching middle school English and history, until my son was born in 2019. I've worked with teachers and students from the top schools in Dallas, including St. Mark's, Greenhill, Jesuit, Parish, and ESD. Now living in Frisco, I am so excited to expand my network up here. I absolutely love our community, and cannot wait to help our students transform their academic struggles into triumphs. From a credential standpoint, I received my B.A. from Southern Methodist University, majoring in International Studies and Italian (3.7 overall GPA, 4.0 Italian GPA). I also received my Master of Liberal Studies from Southern Methodist University, earning a 3.9 GPA. I am also the author of the vocabulary-boosting young adult novel "Ahead of Her Time," which premiered at #1 in its sub-category on Amazon. Again, please let me know if you have any questions!

Hobbies

I have always been an avid learner and was incredibly fortunate to study abroad in many of the places I read about, seeing history come alive at the Colosseum and the pyramids. I spent my senior year of high school studying abroad in Italy, living with a host family and studying ancient history. I then spent my junior year of college in the Middle East -- one semester in Egypt and one semester in Israel -- furthering my knowledge of ancient history and Middle Eastern studies. I transformed that knowledge into my first book, a young adult novel that sneakily boosts students' vocabulary, "Ahead of Her Time." I've written countless other vocabulary-boosting short stories for my educational platform, Vocabbett. In short, I love learning and teaching. It is such a joy for me to expand my understanding of the world and help the next generation do the same.
